Paper Trading vs. Live Trading: What's the Difference?
Paper trading simulates trades with fake money against real market prices, so you can test a strategy with zero financial risk. Live trading sends real orders, with real money, through a real broker — and it behaves differently in ways paper trading can't fully reproduce. Both matter. Neither is a substitute for the other.
What paper trading gets right
Paper trading is genuinely useful: it shows you how a strategy would have behaved against real, live price movement, lets you practice sizing and discipline without risking a dollar, and gives you a feel for how often setups actually trigger. That's real value — which is exactly why Trading Tavern's paper mode is free forever, no catch, no trial window.
What paper trading can't show you — honestly
We'd rather tell you this straight than let you find out the hard way:
- No real slippage. A simulated fill assumes you got the price you saw. A real order can move the market against you, especially in thinner names or fast-moving conditions.
- No real liquidity constraints. Paper trading doesn't care if there were actually enough shares/contracts available at that price. Live trading does.
- Hindsight bias creeps in. It's easy to be a disciplined paper trader when there's no real money on the line — the psychology of live trading (fear, hesitation, revenge trading) simply doesn't show up in a simulation.
- Execution timing differs. Real order routing, partial fills, and broker-side delays don't exist in a simulated environment.
Anyone who tells you paper results predict live results one-for-one is selling you something. We're not going to do that.
